“Rivers determine land, livelihood and lives—and Des Moines’ rivers are a force. Crossing 'Wading Bridge' and getting our feet wet allows us a momentary intimacy with this river.”
Initially located off the Raccoon Riverbank, the floating bridge allowed people to walk not only over the water—but in the water—as the design of the center section of Wading Bridge was be submerged under water.
"Wading Bridge" was funded by the Public Art Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts and Iowa Arts Council, the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs. It was organized by the MPO and Public Art Foundation, in partnership with Water Works Park Foundation, the DNR, Department of Natural Resources, guided the science, ecology, and historical themes of community engagement.
