On Being Blue is a soft sculpture I made in 2022-2023 during an upheaval. I sought out fabrics in cobalt or ultramarine blue. These textiles became a physical diary, and I wrapped and restitched the pieces into a bundle form.
In 2018 I found an old, marked-up copy of the book On Being Blue by William H. Gass. He writes, "Among the ancient elements, blue occurs everywhere: in ice and water, in the flame as purely as in the flower, overhead and inside caves, covering fruit and oozing out of clay."
He goes on to write, "Blue is therefore most suitable as the color of interior life... Blue moves easily among them all, and all profoundly qualify our states of feeling."
As you explore these soft sculptures, you'll notice my experiences. These include moments of pain, joy, and above all, an abundance of hope woven into each sculpture. Having the privilege to share this tender process with you is an honor.
"On Being Blue" is a round textile sculpture. This soft sculpture is contemplative, it's a slow moment within the speed of daily life. Also, it serves as a reminder that everything matters, including the depth and liveliness of our emotions.
