On Being Blue: Soft Sculpture | Textile Sculpture
In 2018 I found an old, marked-up copy of the book On Being Blue by William H. Gass. He writes, "Among the ancient elements, blue occurs everywhere: in ice and water, in the flame as purely as in the flower, overhead and inside caves, covering fruit and oozing out of clay...Blue is therefore most suitable as the color of interior life. Whether slick light sharp high bright thin quick sour new and cool or low deep sweet dark soft slow smooth heavy old and warm: blue moves easily among them all, and all profoundly qualify our states of feeling."
On Being Blue is a small "bundle" sculpture I made in 2022-2023 during an upheaval. I sought out fabrics in cobalt or ultramarine blue. These fabrics became a physical diary, I cut, restitched, and wrapped the pieces into a mended spherical form.
As you explore these sculptures, I hope you'll notice my experiences—moments of pain, joy, and above all, an abundance of hope woven into each sculpture. The act of crafting has been a consistent healer in my life, and having the privilege to share this tender process with you is an honor.
On Being Blue is a spherical bundle made of fabric and buttons. It is 7 in x 8 in x 9 in and weighs seven pounds. This small sculpture is contemplative, a slow moment within the speed of daily life, and serves as a reminder that everything matters, including the depth and liveliness of our emotions.
