Last Light/First Light is a journey through time and light. For years, I have dedicated myself to capturing the ethereal beauty of the shortest day of the year.
I seek out locations with a flat horizon to the east and west, occasionally returning to the same hallowed grounds. I observe with patience as the light dances on the edge of disappearance, only to witness its triumphant return once more. The cross pattern, a result of shooting a roll of 2 1/4 film at dusk and then reusing the same roll at dawn, is a testament to the serendipitous nature of their process. The 90-degree rotation echoes the rotation of our planet to the sun, adding a layer of symbolism to the artwork.
The captivating journey of Last Light/First Light began in the year 2000 on the West Coast of the United States. Serving as documentation of light and time itself, this particular image is the result of a double exposure born from chance and celestial alignment. The photograph was taken on December 21st and 22nd, 2021.
Limited to 25 prints total, each 12" x 12" photograph is signed on the verso and framed in a simple, elegant white wooden frame. Owning this edition means becoming a custodian of a visual narrative that transcends time and connects you to the boundless universe.
