Last Light/First Light, 2008 | Limited Edition Photograph
Last Light/First Light, 2008 | Limited Edition Photograph
For over twenty years, I have been devoting myself to capturing the elusive beauty of light that unfolds on the shortest day of the year. On this day, I venture in search of locations representing a seamless horizon. Then, I patiently observe as light edges toward the disappearance, and I stay awake to witness its return that morning.
The cross emerges as a result of shooting a roll of 2 1/4 film at dusk and then reusing the same roll at dawn, in a process filled with chance. The deliberate 90-degree rotation mirrors our planet's rotation as it synchronizes with the sun.
I started Last Light/First Light in the year 2001 on the West Coast of the United States, while I was living in Oregon and had recently relocated to New York. I created this limited edition photograph through a double exposure process on December 21st and 22nd, 2008.
For a contemporary art collector, this landscape photograph belongs to a limited edition comprising 50 prints. When you acquire one of these editions, you take on the role of a custodian. You're entrusted with preserving a visual narrative that establishes a connection to the elements.
